What is the Archives and what materials are located there?
Founded in 1975, the CSU Archives has the following mission statement:
The Archives at Columbus State University supports the educational, research, and service mission of Columbus State University and the Simon Schwob Memorial Library by collecting, preserving, and providing access to historical and cultural information about Columbus State University, the city of Columbus, and surrounding Chattahoochee Valley. In addition, the Archives serves as a community advocate for the preservation of historical materials and promotes the use of these materials by the Columbus State University community, scholars, and the public.
The Archives contains a variety of material types, including original manuscripts, oral histories, photographs, rare books, and architectural drawings. Major collections include the A.H. Chappell Rare Book Collection, the Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins Sheet Music Collection, the Seaborn Jones-Henry Benning Papers, the Carson McCullers Research Collection, and the Joseph Mahan Collection. At the current time the Archives has over 200 manuscript collections which comprise some 2000 linear feet of material. Researchers from the across the nation and around the world visit the Archives to learn more about the Chattahoochee Valley and her residents.
What type of work would I be engaged in?
The Archives has a variety of projects for interns. Many interns learn basic archival preservation skills by processing manuscript collections. Recent interns have processed collections relating to Columbus music history, African-American history, and the Columbus born author Carson McCullers. Interns with technical skills can find opportunities to develop digital exhibits or engage in database management. Interns can also choose to work in the public service area of the archives.
How do I apply?
The first step is filling out the Application of Internship Placement. The second step is to schedule a visit with Reagan Grimsley, the CSU Archivist. If the internship is being taken for credit, the applicant may then proceed to the Chair of the CSU History Department to obtain permission to register for HIST 4698-Internship. Students may register for 1-6 credit hours of HIST 4698, and must complete 40 hours of work per each hour of internship credit. (ie 3 hours = 120 hours of work).
